Music Friday: Why I enjoy violin music

I love violin music. This love (partially anyway) probably stem from being rebellious.

In elementary school, I had this teacher that I couldn’t stand. Feeling was mutual. She didn’t like me either. For whatever reason, she just didn’t like me. She was like a dictator. No, scratch that. She was a dictator to those she didn’t like.

In her class, she was always right and you, a child, was always wrong. If you talk back, like I did, well…you guessed it… Labeled as a problem child.

I know this shouldn’t happen, but these things happen all the time. I have seen some teachers play favorites and along with that, well, you have “unfavorable” pupils. It so happened that I fell into that latter group in this woman’s class. I have also been a teacher’s pet in other classes, so I know exactly how that feels on the other side. And I don’t like being in either situation. I just didn’t enjoy school back then…

To make a painfully long story short as this will be in my future novel,  she would always call my parents (and drag them all the way across town to do a parent-teacher conference almost weekly) and of course, one of my parent always (at that time) took her side because in my parent’s culture, the teacher is (was) always right. I was the “problem” child… Why couldn’t I be like so and so and listen to the teacher? o_O

Thankfully, my other parent tend to believe me (a little more) and try to smooth things over and in time, they both realized that she was (indeed) a horrible dictator. Too late. By then, I have already graduated from that class and transferred to another school, so that was that… (Good riddance.)

So why did I start liking violin music? One of my parent loved classical music, so I was greatly influenced by that interest. Besides that, this horrible teacher always told us in class that the violin, with its screeching sound, sounds horrible and at best, boring.

My opinion… exactly the opposite. I think the violin is and have always been — beautiful and wonderfully soothing.

I hope you enjoy this Bach piece and that it helps you melt away this past week’s stress. Happy Friday! x

  1. Love, love the violin too. This post was beautiful. Thank you!

  2. It’s one of our favourite pieces of music ever and makes us go goosebumply. Thank goodness you dictator didn’t ruin string music for you – that would have been a crime :-)

    • I love it. I took some private lessons, but didn’t have time to practice, so I don’t play anymore, but I do enjoy it when I hear good violin music. :)

  3. I grew up learning how to play the violin. I never really got used to or liked the sound of dry rub of the hair against the strings. Nevertheless, I loved playing in orchestras because the culmination of sounds were enough to hide that annoying sounds, but allow myself to hear the beautiful music I was translating the notes into.

    • Ah, I see. I don’t mind it, but I see what you mean. I just rosin my bow a lot before I practice. :) And I agree, I love listening to orchestra music. So many beautiful sounds. Thanks for your comment. :)

  4. We problem children have to stick together. I played the violin from 1966 to 1993. Sold my violin for $5,000 which helped me move to San Diego in 1993.
